Mary was born in Hereford in 1370. She could trace her ancestors back to Humphrey de Bohun who came over with
William the Conquerer in 1066, and beyond that to the township of St Georges de Bohon in Normandy, and ultimately
to Danish vikings who had come to settle there. Through another branch of the family tree, she
can trace her ancestors back to Charlemagne, the Holy Roman Emperor.
In 1381 she married fourteen-year-old Henry Bolingbroke, the son of John of
Gaunt who was the Lord Protector under the minority of Richard II.
Henry's uncle,
Thomas Woodstock had tried to thwart the marriage and send her to a convent
so that he himself couldget his hands on her inheritance including her Welsh
estates. The coupleshared a love of music, he would play
the flute whilst she sang and joined him on a canticum. Later
they developed a mutual pleasure in chess. They had four children
together, the first and most famous of these was Henry, born
in Monmouth in 1387 who was later to become Henry V the victor at
the battle of Agincourt in 1415.
It was whilst crossing at Walford ferry, just downstream from Ross, that Henry IV, then the Earl of Derby, heard of the birth of his son, the later Henry V. In honour of the event, the earl forthwith presented to the boatman the ferry and all the perquisites therefrom, and the descendants of this fortunate ferryman continued in enjoyment of the gift for several centuries.
The last of these offspring was Philippa (1394) whose birth sadly cost Mary her life. Mary therefore, although the mother of one of the most famous and popular kings of England, never became queen herself, but Henry IV's reigning queen was Joan of Navarre.
